Today, pregnant women havemany choices, and the core of all of these is to have a healthy baby.

While there are different options available to create a unique birth experience, it is important to understand that you and your baby’s health should always be the top priority. Although women have been giving birth for thousands of years, it is medical advances and resources that have made birth much safer for mom and baby.

Because the medical care that women may need during labor and delivery cannot always be predicted, The American College of ObGyns recommends that women deliver in a hospital.

Hospital births sometimes get a reputation for being too focused on a clinical and technological approach, and not focused on a mom’s personal wishes. But, in fact, hospitals are able to accommodate many birthing requests (including doulas and unmedicated births) while providing a safe environment for mom and baby.

Tips for Personalizing Your Hospital Birth

  1. Choose the right team: Even before you find out that you’re pregnant, you can begin researching local providers. If you are looking for a safe and personal birth experience, you may find what you are looking for with our team of Certified Nurse Midwives (link to what’s a CNM) in collaboration with our physicians. Working with a midwife can mean less intervention with more personal attention, along with a team that is backed by the safety net of a hospital setting in case there is anunexpected emergency.
  2. Bring your doula: According to ACOG‘s recommendation, “in addition to regular nursing care, continuous one-to-one emotional support provided by support personnel, such as a doula, is associated with improved outcomes for women in labor.”
  3. Share your birth plan: Want popsicles instead of ice chips? Don’t want the epidural? Want your sister and mom in the delivery room?Have discussions with your providers throughout the pregnancy about your wishes and expectations for the delivery. A better understanding about what you can and can’t control will make for a much more positive birth experience.
  4. Pack a homey hospital bag: Packing your hospital bag (link to article) is one of the final steps you’ll take before heading to the hospital to deliver, and it gives you an opportunity to bring all those things from home that you love to comfort you — your favorite slippers, pajamas, robe, and even body wash.
  5. Make a playlist: Not a fan of cable? Make a playlist packed with relaxing and encouraging tunes for the different stages of your labor, delivery and recovery.
  6. Surround yourself with loved ones: In a hospital setting, you still get to choose who is in the room with you, supporting you, cheering you on, and getting excited for the baby’s arrival. Take time to evaluate who you want and need in the room to set the tone of your birth experience and remember, you can always change your mind. We are here to help you achieve the best birthing experience possible!
