Biography/Personal Interests

Emily Grose loves a good story — and she loves her patients’ stories most of all. “My patients’ stories of strength and resilience inspire me every day,” she says.

When it came to realizing her own passion for women’s healthcare, Grose says she didn’t have an “aha” moment. It was a gradual process, subtly influenced by her grandmother. “My grandma was a women’s health nurse practitioner, and a very strong voice for reproductive rights and sexual health education,” says Grose. “I think she influenced me more than I ever realized.”

Two other experiences helped cement Grose’s decision to become a midwife. During college, she traveled to South Africa to work at an AIDS prevention clinic. After graduating, she worked at the Native American Women’s Health Education Resource Center in Lake Andes, South Dakota. Although she enjoyed public-health outreach, she realized her true calling was to be a hands-on provider.

“Midwifery is a good fit for me because of its holistic, individualized approach,” she says. “We deliver evidence-based care to our patients, but we also believe in the strength and ability of our bodies to do the right thing — and that pregnancy and childbirth are natural processes of life.”

Grose describes herself as a good listener, calm, open-minded, self-aware, and curious. “I’m always looking for ways to improve and grow,” she says.

“I like adventures!” she adds, “whether it be hiking, or kayaking, or snowshoeing, exploring a new town, or trying a new restaurant. I always want to try something new. I also love to read, and cook.” A perfect day off would include going for a hike with her wife, Lindsey, visiting a local brewery, and cooking dinner at home.

“What I like most about being a midwife is helping women meet the goals they share with me,” she says. Beyond guiding women through pregnancy, Grose supports women at all stages of life, from young adults needing contraception to women in menopause and beyond.

“Patients experience things that really affect their lives, like pelvic pain, or problems with birth control or sexual health — things they aren’t always comfortable talking about,” she says. “And being able to help them, so they can focus on their lives, is so fulfilling.”
